Asda Shares Crucial Advice for Egg Buyers Amid Rising Costs

With the cost of living soaring, many households across the UK are tightening their budgets and looking for ways to minimize food waste. Among staple foods, eggs remain a popular, affordable, and protein-packed choice, perfect for meals throughout the day—from eggs florentine at breakfast to shakshuka for dinner.

Recognizing the importance of eggs in daily diets and budgets, retail giant Asda has issued an important advisory on how to store eggs properly to extend their freshness and keep your grocery bills down.

One common question many people have is where to store eggs—should they be left unrefrigerated as seen in supermarkets, or kept in the fridge at home?

Asda explains that eggs are not refrigerated in stores because the temperature is consistently controlled. However, maintaining a constant temperature at home can be challenging, especially with the recent UK heatwave soaring to 31°C. Therefore, the supermarket recommends storing eggs in the fridge at home but keeping them separate from other foods to avoid contamination.

Additionally, Asda shared a simple and effective freshness test for eggs called the “water test.” To check if your eggs are still safe to eat, fill a bowl with cold water and gently place your eggs inside. If an egg sinks to the bottom and lies flat, it’s fresh. If it stands upright or floats to the surface, it’s time to discard it as it’s no longer fresh.

By following these storage and freshness tips, you can reduce food waste, save money, and enjoy eggs safely and deliciously every day.
