Plans to demolish existing buildings and construct five new homes on a site near a boatyard in the Severnside village of Ruddle have been officially approved. On June 10, permission was granted to Paul Yarworth to redevelop two-thirds of an acre at Orchard Court, located just south of the A48.
The approved project includes three detached houses and a pair of semi-detached homes, each with dedicated parking. Situated more than 200 yards from Newnham-on-Severn’s edge, the site currently hosts a variety of agricultural structures.
Historically, the area included a home and facilities used for slaughtering and storing animal carcasses, alongside related business activities. However, these operations ceased following regulatory changes. More recently, the land served as a depot for Mr. Yarworth’s business, which involves collecting carcasses from farms and roadkill for delivery to a registered intermediate facility.

Additionally, the applicant maintains a small herd of cattle and a few horses on site. At the Forest of Dean District Council development management committee meeting, Ward Councillor Richard Burton expressed strong support for the redevelopment, highlighting its benefits and encouraging approval.
Councillor Simon Phelps noted the absence of objections from the parish council and neighbors, acknowledging that, “Without wishing to be derogatory to the applicants, I think this will tidy up the site considerably.”
Ultimately, the councillors voted unanimously to approve the redevelopment plan, reflecting broad support for the project’s positive impact on the area.
