Apology as Fish and Chips Prices Soar

The manager of a chip shop in Stonehouse, near Stroud, has issued an apology to customers as the price of cod and chips hits a high of £15 due to soaring costs. Brad-Lee Navruz of The Nippy Chippy explained that the increase is a result of the cost of fish surging by over 60 per cent in just three months.

Navruz expressed empathy for customers, acknowledging that the price hike may impact their Friday treat. While most customers were understanding, some were visibly surprised by the significant increase. The shop had previously only raised prices by a modest amount, but this time saw a considerable jump due to rising fish costs.

The annual fishing quotas negotiation between the UK, EU, and Norway resulted in a 20% drop in the cap for cod and a 5% decrease for haddock, reflecting a commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

Despite the surge in fish and chips prices, customers have not deserted the shop but are opting for cheaper alternatives such as sausage and chips or burger and chips.

Former fish and chip shop owner Bob Clapham, 77, noted that rising prices were to be expected as the cost of various items, including fish and potatoes, continues to increase.

The UK Fisheries Minister Daniel Zeichner emphasized the government’s support for the fishing industry and the sustainable management of stocks such as cod and haddock.
