The anticipation is palpable as the public eagerly awaits news about when the American wholesale retail giant, Costco, will commence the construction of its planned new site in Gloucester. In December, city planners unanimously approved proposals for a new 13,109sqm store, along with an 18-bay petrol station with a tyre fitting shop in Barnwood.
The redevelopment of the former Interbrew site on Eastern Avenue is projected to generate up to 250 job opportunities. Costco management, during the plan’s deliberation by Gloucester City Council, highlighted that the new store would result in a substantial investment in the city and the revitalization of a site that has been vacant for seven years.
Stating that they “own the site and wish to commence the development as soon as possible,” Costco executives were pressed this week for details on the construction commencement and a prospective opening date for the Gloucester store.

However, Costco declined to comment, citing their policy, although they expressed appreciation for the support received. Residents, reaching out to Gloucestershire Live, eagerly seek information about the anticipated opening date of the site.
Local civic leaders express satisfaction with Costco’s investment in Gloucester and eagerly anticipate the commencement of the project.
Labour MP for the city, Alex McIntyre, commented, “It’s fantastic to see businesses like Costco investing in our city. Their new store will provide much-needed jobs and will revitalize an area of the city that has been undeveloped for a long time. I’m looking forward to the work getting started.”
Conservative City Councillor Andrew Gravells (Abbeydale) voiced support for job creation in Gloucester, expressing interest in how Costco’s prices will compare with existing retail outlets while affirming loyalty to the local Morrisons branch.
A Costco spokesperson indicated that they do not have further information at this time, reiterating the company’s policy of refraining from commenting on future warehouses or construction until ready to disclose details about the new location.
