Gloucester city centre is set to introduce Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to tackle illegal parking in the Gate Streets. Starting mid-December, cameras will be installed where bollards previously stood, marking a firm move against rule-breaking drivers.
The decision follows growing concerns over the increasing number of vehicles driving and parking in the pedestrian-designated Gate Streets, creating hazards for pedestrians and disrupting the area’s flow. Earlier this year, calls for stricter enforcement surfaced, particularly after several drivers were spotted accessing takeaways by vehicle within these zones.
In August 2024, the authorities reinforced warnings that motorists parked illegally in the Gate Streets would face fines. Now, Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) has officially announced the deployment of ANPR cameras alongside new signage to affirm the no-parking rules.

The updated parking regulations specify loading times are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes, allowed only between 8 am to 10 am and 5 pm to 6 pm. Additionally, permits will be available for necessary works requiring vehicle access.
This proactive approach aims to enhance pedestrian safety, reduce traffic disruptions, and ensure the city centre remains accessible and welcoming for all visitors.
