Cheltenham is set to lose another beloved dining spot as Gallimores Kitchen, located in The Courtyard, announces its closure. Since opening its doors in June 2020 under the leadership of experienced local chef Lee Gallimore, the restaurant has become a cherished part of the town’s culinary scene.
The restaurant’s final day will be Sunday, November 16. Citing the ongoing economic challenges, Gallimores shared an emotional message on Instagram, saying: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of our restaurant. Due to the current economic situation, we can no longer continue serving you. We want to thank each and every one of you for your support, smiles, and memories shared with us over the years. This place was more than just a restaurant – it was a community, a family, and a dream. Thank you for being a part of our story.”
This closure is part of a growing trend in Cheltenham, where several cafes, restaurants, and shops have recently shut down. Among others, the Fired Earth showroom on Montpellier Walk closed after the chain entered administration on October 31. The Clarks shoe store on the High Street, Ask Italian in Montpellier, Ox in Cambray Place, Cake Alchemist, Domain 16, and The Find on Regent Street have also ceased operations. The Starbucks at Boots’ Corner on the Promenade is scheduled to close by November 29.
Despite these losses, there are new developments in the area, such as a Tesco Express planning to open on the Promenade, and ethical luxury brand Freckleface relocating nearby.
Cheltenham Borough Council has acknowledged concerns over the wave of closures. Cabinet member Izaac Tailford (LD, All Saints) emphasized the council’s commitment: “We understand the pressures facing the hospitality sector and remain dedicated to promoting the town while collaborating with partners to support local businesses.”
Gallimores Kitchen’s farewell post sparked an outpouring of sympathy from the community. Patrons praised the restaurant for its excellent service and memorable atmosphere. One shared, “I’m devastated… Gallimores has become such an institution in Cheltenham. Always fabulous service and great food.” Another commented, “Such a shame, love this restaurant. Spent many days there enjoying food, wine, and company. The staff were amazing and friendly. It will be missed. Thank you to all at Gallimores.”
As Gallimores Kitchen closes its doors, the impact of its loss is profoundly felt, underscoring how much it meant to the Cheltenham community.
