Andrew Lloyd Webber Delights Students at School Production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the renowned composer behind some of the world’s most beloved musicals, made a heartwarming surprise visit to Westonbirt School during their senior production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This musical holds special significance as the very first one he composed at just 18 years old.

Attending to support his granddaughter, Lord Lloyd Webber joined the audience on opening night at the co-educational independent day and boarding school in Tetbury. His presence added an extra layer of excitement and inspiration to the performance.

Headmistress Natasha Dangerfield expressed her pride, saying, “We were absolutely delighted and honoured to welcome such a distinguished guest. His visit truly brought the musical’s message — ‘if you think it, want it, dream it… then it’s real’ — to life for our students. Despite the added pressure of performing for such a notable figure, the cast shone brilliantly and were thrilled to receive Mr. Lloyd Webber’s personal praise.”

The evening was a memorable celebration of the students’ talents, supported wholeheartedly by staff, friends, and families. It was hailed as a perfect conclusion to the school term.

After the final curtain, Lord Lloyd Webber met the cast and crew, personally thanking them for their “colourful performance.” He shared insights into the origins of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which began as a brief 20-minute piece for schools before evolving into the full-length musical we know today, following the success of Jesus Christ Superstar.

He also commended the cast’s unique interpretation, noting the challenges of the score, which was originally written for boys. “You should feel very proud – it’s not an easy sing for girls,” he remarked encouragingly.

The school’s drama department described the night as “an unforgettable and truly extraordinary experience” for the students involved, marking a highlight in their theatrical journey.
