Gloucestershire’s emergency departments have faced their busiest days ever amid recent intense heatwaves, with high humidity severely impacting hospital equipment functionality. Hospital leaders reveal that the last three heatwaves have profoundly disrupted diagnostic services. At a health overview and scrutiny committee meeting on July 14, Kevin McNamara, chief executive of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, explained how extreme heat and humidity have forced hospitals to rethink their seasonal preparations. He reported that during the latest heatwave, only one MRI scanner was operational across Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General hospitals combined.
