American Tries Toby Carvery for the First Time and Discovers Yorkshire Pudding Delight

Matt and Omar, a couple from San Francisco with a combined following of 1.4 million on TikTok, recently journeyed to the UK for a family wedding. While there, they made a point to sample some of Britain’s most beloved foods—from Borough Market’s fresh strawberries and classic Greggs pasties to authentic fish and chips and the much-loved Cadbury Creme Eggs.

One highlight of their culinary adventure was a visit to Toby Carvery in Bolton, Greater Manchester, where Matt enjoyed his very first traditional British roast dinner. Sharing the experience on their TikTok account @mattandomar, Omar revealed, “I took my American husband to Toby Carvery for the first time.”

At the carvery counter, Matt chose turkey and pork, piling his plate high with trimmings such as stuffing, roast potatoes, vegetables, and a Yorkshire pudding—a dish unfamiliar to him despite the name. “What is a Yorkshire pudding? I thought pudding was a dessert,” he wondered aloud.

Upon tasting the meal, Matt’s reaction was enthusiastic: “That is Thanksgiving, it tastes like Thanksgiving in a bite. You can have Thanksgiving all the time here. We only have it once a year and you have it all the time. This is heaven.” While the cauliflower cheese didn’t win him over, he concluded his feast simply: “I’m happy.”

Fans of the pair quickly engaged with the video, sharing their own love for Toby Carvery. Comments ranged from Americans and Canadians expressing their cravings, to UK locals surprised to have never visited despite passing the establishment regularly. Many agreed that enjoying roast dinners more often would be ideal—“Only having a roast dinner once a year is criminal. Sort it out, America!” one comment joked.

Others reflected on Toby Carvery’s value as a convenient family meal option, with one admirer declaring, “I think Toby Carvery is underrated lowkey it’s nice and I don’t care, I’ll stand by it.” Even Toby Carvery themselves joined in, commenting, “We are obsessed.”

Matt and Omar’s first foray into the classic British roast not only satisfied their appetites but also sparked a lively discussion about the joys of traditional UK dining.
