The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat across Gloucestershire as the UK experiences its fifth heatwave of the year. This warning is effective from 9am until 11:59pm on Thursday, 13 August.
Temperatures in the region are expected to soar above 30°C, with Gloucester and Cirencester potentially reaching 35°C by 5pm. Meanwhile, Bristol and Yeovil are forecast to hit 31°C, with Wells, Taunton, and Bath reaching 32°C. Areas such as Bridgwater and Chard are anticipated to see temperatures between 29°C and 30°C.
The public is advised to be vigilant, particularly vulnerable individuals, as the extreme heat could lead to adverse health effects. The wider population may experience sunburn, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has highlighted significant anticipated impacts across the region, especially concerning health and social care services, which are likely to face increased demand.

An increase in mortality rates among those over 65 and younger demographics is also expected. The amber heat health alert will remain in place until 9pm on Friday, 14 August.
The Met Office also warns of potential disruptions to daily routines and working practices due to the heat. Some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, and widespread power cuts across the region are possible.
Weather forecasts for Gloucestershire and surrounding areas for the coming days are as follows:

Thursday: A dry and predominantly sunny day with minimal high cloud developing during the afternoon. Despite sea breezes offering some relief, it will feel hot with maximum temperatures reaching 34°C.

Thursday night: Dry and very warm with plenty of late sunshine. Some cloud may enter from the west overnight, but it will remain largely clear elsewhere. The night is expected to be warm and uncomfortable with temperatures not falling below 15°C.

Friday: Warm and sunny at first, but cloud cover is likely to increase, causing sunshine to be hazy. A few showers may develop in western areas, and temperatures will drop to a maximum of 26°C.

Weekend Outlook (Saturday to Monday): Generally dry with intervals of sunshine throughout the weekend. While Monday is expected to stay dry initially, rain may arrive later in the day. Temperatures will cool, returning closer to average levels.
