Amanda Owen Breaks Down as She Recalls Son’s Life-Saving Air Ambulance Rescue

Amanda Owen, the beloved star of Our Yorkshire Farm, opened up about a traumatic moment from 2022 on the latest episode of Reuben Owen’s Channel 5 series, Life in The Dales. In a deeply moving segment aired on Tuesday, June 24, Amanda recounted the urgent medical crisis involving her son, Miles, and the life-saving efforts of the Great North Air Ambulance team.

Miles experienced a severe medical emergency when he developed diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a dangerous condition caused by a critical shortage of insulin that leads to high levels of ketones in the blood. This condition, often linked to undiagnosed type 1 diabetes, can escalate rapidly and requires immediate intervention.

Living in a remote area, the Owens faced the challenge of slow transportation to the hospital—a two-hour car journey that was simply too long in such a critical situation. Thanks to the prompt response of the air ambulance team, Miles was airlifted to the nearest hospital in just 17 minutes, a fact Amanda described as “a massive relief” during the frightening ordeal.

The episode featured an emotional reunion between Miles and the paramedic Mike and doctor Rachel from the air ambulance crew who played a pivotal role in his rescue. Watching the helicopter land again brought back intense emotions for Amanda, though Miles himself has no memory of the event.

Amanda tearfully told Miles, “You don’t remember any of it, not even a bit. It’s bringing it all back for me even if it’s not for you.” Despite her evident tears, she insisted, “I’m not crying, not crying.”

Miles shared his gratitude with the crew, acknowledging their role in saving his life. “I owe my life to you all,” he said, to which Mike responded warmly, reinforcing their commitment to the community’s well-being.

The Owens family hopes that sharing this story will raise awareness about type 1 diabetes and the critical nature of DKA. Amanda expressed immense pride in Miles and optimism about modern medical advancements that allow him to lead a normal, healthy life despite his condition.

Ahead of the episode, Amanda and Miles took to Instagram to share snapshots of the air ambulance rescue and encourage viewers to learn more about the life-threatening risks of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Life in The Dales continues to provide an intimate look into the challenges and triumphs of rural Yorkshire life, shining a light on resilience, family, and the life-saving work of emergency services.
