Alex Jones has opened up about her ongoing commitment to The One Show as the programme celebrates 20 years on air this month. Since its debut in August 2006, the 49-year-old has become the show’s longest-serving presenter, leading the BBC evening magazine programme for 15 years.
Reflecting on the show’s impressive longevity, Alex expressed her belief that it “definitely” has the potential to continue for another two decades.
“I think this show will probably outlive any of us,” she said. “It’s more relevant than ever and as successful as ever.”

She acknowledged the rarity of such sustained success in television, telling Closer magazine, “People in television are often obsessed with what’s next, but longevity is really hard to sustain.”
Regarding her own future on the show, Alex said, “If they’ll have me, I’ll stay as long as they want!”
Looking back over her time on The One Show, the Welsh presenter addressed whether any live broadcast moments had made her cringe. She explained, “Because the show is so well produced, I think people sometimes forget it’s live. We don’t over-rehearse because we want to keep it fresh and we enjoy not quite knowing what’s going to happen.”
She added with a laugh, “I get people’s names wrong all the time, but I don’t think people mind because they’re on a journey with us.”
Over the years, Alex has co-hosted alongside several presenters, including Matt Baker, who left the show in 2020 after nine years. More recent co-presenters include Vernon Kay, Roman Kemp, and Ronan Keating.
Expanding her media portfolio, Alex has recently taken on a new role outside of television by joining Zoe Ball as a temporary co-host on the “Dig It” podcast, stepping in during Jo Whiley’s absence.
In one episode, she shared candid insights into her family life with her husband Charlie Thomson and their three children. Responding to a contributor’s frustrations about their partner’s household habits, Alex sympathised and revealed her own experiences.
She confessed to Zoe, “This is my rant for this morning, among the 50 I’ve probably had at you since we started this. But do you know what he does, which really annoys me? He says, ‘I’m going to put a wash on’ and you can see that he’s really pleased with himself.”
Describing Charlie’s approach to laundry, she continued, “He puts a pile outside his bedroom door, which maybe he’ll carry down two hours later to the washing machine. Then if the washing machine is full, he’ll just leave them by the washing machine hoping the magical fairies of washing will come and put them in. Or he’ll put them in and he’ll put it on and the wash will happen but he will never empty it.”
Alex admitted that despite Charlie’s “good intentions”, she often ended up “rewashing” the laundry herself.
