Alan Titchmarsh recently shared his experience working alongside David Beckham at the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The event saw Titchmarsh join Beckham, garden designer Frances Tophill, and King Charles to unveil the Curious Garden—an inspiring project from the RHS and the King’s Foundation aimed at encouraging young people to explore careers in horticulture.
The garden featured delphiniums, a favorite flower of King Charles, an oak-framed building symbolizing a museum of garden curiosities, and the debut of the Sir David Beckham rose.
Speaking to The Times, Alan Titchmarsh reflected on Beckham’s commitment and natural charm during their time at the show. “He’s doing a good job; he really enjoys growing vegetables. More importantly, he’s fantastic with people,” Titchmarsh noted. “When I walked around Chelsea with him, no selfie was too much trouble. He’s bringing a fresh wave of interest that makes gardening seem cool and accessible.”

Titchmarsh’s insights align with his previous interview of Beckham for Country Life magazine last year, where he highlighted Beckham’s hands-on approach to gardening at his Cotswolds home. Beckham personally planted half of a Euonymus japonicus hedge, showcasing his genuine involvement.
Beckham chose the Cotswolds for its natural beauty and accessibility, ensuring his children could visit easily from London. After an extensive search, he bought a barn property undergoing renovation, driven by a clear vision for its potential. Despite not consulting his wife Victoria initially, she later embraced the project fully.
Recalling his wife’s reaction, Beckham said, “She didn’t want another project after renovating our London house. I sat her down with a vodka and tonic and told her what I’d done.” He added, “I brought the family back fourteen months later when everything was finished.”
Ahead of the Chelsea Flower Show, Beckham spoke about his childhood influences and passion for gardening. “Visiting my grandparents sparked my love of gardening. I’ve experienced how rewarding it can be, and I’m excited to work with The RHS and The King’s Foundation on the Curious Garden. I hope it inspires others to connect with nature and try something new.”
