Alan Titchmarsh, a beloved TV presenter and gardening expert, has candidly reflected on the journey of his remarkable career and the importance of embracing life’s precious moments. Since his television debut in 1979, Alan has become a familiar face through iconic programs like Ground Force, Gardeners’ World, and The Alan Titchmarsh Show.
Now 76, Alan acknowledges how fortunate he feels to have had such a rewarding career. Growing up in 1950s Yorkshire, he lived through challenging times and had “realistic aspirations” given the circumstances. With just one O Level, he began as an apprentice gardener with Ilkley Council, before furthering his studies at Hertfordshire College of Agriculture and Horticulture and working at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew.
Speaking to Saga magazine, Alan shared a poignant outlook: “There seemed no point in having any [aspirations]. So, if it all finishes tomorrow, I will have a lot to be grateful for.” He also humorously mentioned, “I’m of an age now where not many people my age are on the box, but I’m still doing new things and I’ve still got my hair.”

Embracing modern platforms, Alan has recently expanded his presence onto YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, aiming to “give people their money’s worth” and continue sharing his passion. Though he has begun to ease back on his schedule, no longer working Fridays and sometimes Mondays, he treasures the extra time spent with his family. Reflecting on his oldest grandchild turning 13, he said, “It’s the old cliché, but you can’t get it back.”
Alan shares his life with his wife, Ali, to whom he has been married for over 50 years. Together they have two daughters, Polly and Camilla, and four grandchildren. While he admits to not expecting to maintain such an active workload at this stage of life, Alan continues to enjoy the opportunities that come his way.
Fans can look forward to seeing Alan back on screens this week with the new ITV One show Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh. Airing at 9:30 a.m., the program features Alan alongside guests Anita Dobson, Tom Allen, and Amol Rajan. Highlights include horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith’s summer diary, a visit to the brown bears at Jimmy’s Farm, and Andy Clarke’s tips on festival-season drinks and snacks.
