Alan Titchmarsh, the beloved presenter of Gardeners’ World, has openly apologized to his wife Alison for a personal quirk that has long been a source of mild irritation. Married since 1975 and parents to two children, Alan and Alison have shared a lifetime together, but the 76-year-old admits he has always been a “potterer” — someone who struggles to sit still for long.
When asked recently if he does anything that irritates Alison, Alan didn’t hesitate. Writing in Gardeners’ World magazine, he explained, “What irritates my wife above all else is my inability to sit still for more than five minutes. I am, you see, a born potterer.”
Alan describes how even when a compelling film captures his attention, he rarely stays seated for long. His concentration with a book lasts only 10 to 15 minutes before restlessness sets in. He doesn’t necessarily jump up to start chores, but inactivity during his busy working week is difficult for him.

He wonders if this restless energy stems from his gardening background, often eager to work outside but sidetracked by other tasks that need completing first. Still, Alan embraces the nature of pottering, finding joy in the simple pleasures of watching birds feed or tending to his garden while “gently busy.”
Though he knows he should take time to relax and appreciate his garden, Alan prefers to do so while dead-heading flowers or edging the lawn. This love of being “gently busy” led him to issue a heartfelt apology to Alison: “So forgive me if, after having sat down for my tea or coffee for all of about three or four minutes, I feel the need to get up and… well, potter. Sorry Mrs T.”
Alan’s illustrious TV career spans over 40 years, beginning with BBC’s Nationwide in 1979. He’s since hosted popular programs like Gardeners’ World, Ground Force, and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show coverage. His current show, Love Your Weekend, airs on ITV One, featuring special guests and ongoing garden projects at Alan’s Manor Farm.
