Aircraft Commemorates VE Day with Stunning Sky Message over Gloucestershire

This morning over Gloucestershire, an aircraft paid tribute to the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day by writing ‘VE80’ in the sky. Shortly after 9 a.m., a single-seat RV-6 aircraft took to the skies over Gloucester, Cirencester, and Stonehouse, creating the message through its flight path—a tribute visible later on flight tracking websites such as ADS-B Exchange.

The RV-6, a kit-plane that was in use from 1986 to 2001 before being succeeded by a newer model, spent approximately 90 minutes in the air. During this time, it skillfully traced the phrase ‘VE80’ above the Gloucestershire landscape before safely landing.

This tribute coincided with nationwide commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender, which brought World War II in Europe to a close. The UK observed a two-minute silence at midday, accompanied by services held across the country.

At Westminster Abbey, members of the Royal Family joined former prime ministers and 78 World War II veterans to honor the day. Gloucestershire Police also paid their respects by remembering four officers who lost their lives during the war: PC Cliff Dibden, Police Auxiliary Messenger Frank Woodward, PC Herbert Hall, and PC Robert ‘Cherry’ Mason.

This unique airborne tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the enduring legacy of peace celebrated on VE Day.
