Shire Hall was enveloped in solemn silence yesterday, July 16, as the community paid heartfelt tribute to a Gloucester family tragically lost in the Air India crash last month. Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa, and their four-year-old daughter Sara were among the 241 passengers who perished when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, en route to London Gatwick.
The tragedy shook Gloucestershire deeply. Gloucestershire County Council observed a minute’s silence in memory of those who died, with Mr. Nanabawa’s cousin among the council staff mourning the loss.
Councillor Sajid Patel of Barton and Tredworth, struggling to contain his emotions, paid tribute to the Nanabawa family as “hardworking, caring, and compassionate members of our community.”

“They lived just around the corner from me, and I would often see them. I think many of us vividly remember where we were on that fateful day,” said Patel. “Our hearts broke alongside their family and the entire Gloucester community.”
Describing the family’s deep roots in the local area, Councillor Patel highlighted their contributions to community sports clubs, schools, and volunteer efforts. “They were kind souls who touched many lives. Losing them is an immense loss to Gloucester.”
Sara, the family’s young daughter, was remembered as “a bright ray of sunshine” whose youthful spirit brought joy to all who knew her.
“May they rest in peace,” Patel continued. “And may God grant strength and patience to their family, friends, and to all who lost loved ones in this tragic event. Their legacy of kindness and dedication will not be forgotten.”
