Aesthetician Reveals How to Protect Your Skin from Stress Damage

Stress can take a serious toll on your skin, affecting over half of people in the UK who report noticeable symptoms. When you’re stressed, your body releases hormones that increase oil production, often causing breakouts and inflammation. Stress also weakens the skin’s barrier, making it more vulnerable to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity.

Experts warn that prolonged stress accelerates skin aging, leading to wrinkles, dullness, and a tired complexion. Katie Onyejekwe, a professional aesthetician and Perfectil Ambassador, offers practical advice for reducing the visible effects of stress on your skin.

“Sleep is essential for skin health,” Katie explains. “A 2020 study showed that even one night of sleep deprivation can significantly reduce skin hydration and elasticity. Although stress can interfere with restful sleep, prioritizing quality rest is vital for both your body and your skin.”

Katie highlights the role of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, which can trigger inflammation and damage the skin barrier. This damage often results in redness, dryness, irritation, and flare-ups of conditions like rosacea and eczema. To protect your skin during stressful times, Katie recommends sticking to a gentle, reparative skincare routine. “Use a ceramide-infused cream layered over serums or essences that contain soothing ingredients such as cica, beta-glucan, and panthenol to calm and strengthen stressed skin.”

Katie also points to red light therapy as an effective treatment to combat stress-related skin issues. “Red light therapy offers anti-inflammatory benefits, promotes skin healing, and supports collagen production,” she says. “It’s why this therapy is often recommended after intensive clinic treatments. Consistency is critical—ideally, use red light therapy daily or at least five times a week. For deeper results, schedule regular sessions with a qualified skin professional.”

Ultimately, Katie emphasizes the importance of self-care: “Nourish your body, maintain a consistent skincare routine, and focus on overall well-being. Managing stress from the inside out is key to keeping your skin radiant and healthy.”
