Adam Henson, the beloved presenter of BBC’s Countryfile, has revealed the touching tale behind a new addition to his Cotswold Farm Park near Guiting Power, Cheltenham. This young Jersey cow, described as an “enigmatic” breed, holds a special place in the hearts of Adam and his family.
Situated over 50 acres, the Cotswold Farm Park is recognised as Britain’s oldest farm park. Established in 1971, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to encounter more than 50 rare and native breeds spanning seven species of British farm animals. The park has earned a reputation for preserving these precious breeds.
Among the many animals, the newcomer, a one-year-old Jersey cow named Gillie, stands out. Celebrated for its toffee-coloured coat and gentle nature, the breed is known for producing rich, creamy milk and is marked by its large eyes, elegant appearance, and long lashes.

Adam shared in his Cotswold Life magazine column that Gillie’s name pays homage to two well-known actresses, Gillian Anderson from The X-Files and Gillian Taylforth from EastEnders. More personally, the name honours his late mother, Gillian, affectionately called Gillie.
The Jersey cow also holds sentimental significance for Adam’s family. His father, Joe Henson, who founded the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, developed a fondness for the breed during his youth, with his first milking experience involving a Jersey cow.
Reflecting on the arrival of Gillie, Adam expressed his affection for the cow and emphasised the deep family connections tied to her breed and name.
In other news, Adam has recently spoken candidly about the future of the farm. With the tenancy due to expire in 12 years, he and his wife, Charlie, plan to move to a bungalow near Winchcombe where they will keep a few sheep and dogs. Their children, however, have chosen different career paths away from farming.
Adam remarked on this transition as “the end of an era,” acknowledging the evolving legacy of the farm while looking forward to continuing life in the countryside.
