Adam Frost, the beloved presenter of BBC’s Gardeners' World since 2016, has revealed the touching reason behind his family’s decision to add a new puppy, Buster, last year. The 55-year-old gardener introduced Buster to his Instagram followers in December and has regularly shared updates about the playful pup.
Buster recently made his debut appearance on Gardeners' World when Adam filmed from his own garden. The new canine companion has joined a lively household that includes Adam, his wife Sulina, their four children, a horse, two ponies, another dog named Islay, and Ash the cat.
Adam explained that the addition of Buster was inspired by his wife’s health struggles. “Mrs Frost had been poorly, and that’s one reason why we moved—to simplify things. We’re recovering now, but having Buster has really changed things,” he said. He recounted how the children encouraged him to get a dog to keep Sulina company, especially since she had retreated somewhat socially due to her illness.

With Buster by her side, Sulina has been more outgoing. “When I’m away working, she tells me she’s out with friends, and Buster is her sidekick,” Adam said. He reflected on the comforting power of animals, gardens, and music, describing them as things that “carry something” through difficult times.
Sulina endured a severe battle with sepsis, spending nearly three months in the hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Adam was navigating his own mental health challenges and supporting one of their children through an eating disorder. Gardening became a vital source of solace, a sentiment he shares with Gardeners' World co-star Monty Don. “If we all gardened, the world would be a better place,” Adam remarked.
Adam himself lives with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes widespread pain and fatigue. Twenty years into managing the condition, he finds fitness and balance crucial to coping. After featuring in a Morning Live documentary on fibromyalgia, Adam received heartfelt messages from others affected, grateful for his openness. “I manage it through fitness mostly and trying to find balance, which isn’t always easy, but I’m good,” he shared.
Recently, Adam posted a lighthearted update featuring Buster, joking about leaving his new dog in charge of looking after Sulina while he attends the Gardeners' World Spring Fair in Beaulieu. Although Buster seemed uninterested, Adam made it clear the little pup was soaking up the sunshine and enjoying his newfound role in the family.
