Adam Frost, well-known for his work on the BBC’s Gardeners’ World, has candidly revealed how his life felt like it was “unravelling” during a challenging period of health issues. His passion for gardening began in childhood and blossomed into a successful career, including designing gardens for the Chelsea Flower Show and becoming a familiar face on television.
Despite his professional achievements, Adam has not hidden his struggles with mental health. In a heartfelt interview with Rutland Pride magazine, he reflected on his experience after contracting Covid in 2021. The solitude left him feeling isolated and detached, saying, “I started to feel disconnected, as if my life was unravelling.” During that time, he found solace only in music while gazing out at the very garden he had lovingly created.
Earlier this year, on Gardeners’ Corner, Adam further opened up about how the ordeal worsened his mental health: “In September 2021 I ended up locked up in a room with Covid, and 10 days later I was sitting in front of a psychiatrist being told I had burnout and depression. Which is a surprise because I only went in the room with Covid.”

Experts linked his depression and burnout to unresolved issues from his past, which Adam acknowledged had “caught up with him.”
This week on Gardeners’ World, Adam will join gardening colleagues Joe Swift, Arit Anderson, Frances Tophill, and Jamie Butterworth as they prepare for an upcoming flower show at the RHS Wentworth Woodhouse in South Yorkshire.
Tune in to Gardeners’ World on BBC Two tonight at 8 p.m. to see Adam’s latest gardening projects and his positive outlook after overcoming recent health challenges.
