Abandoned Pony Rescued After Roaming Gloucester Streets Near Floodwaters

A young pony, believed to have been abandoned, was discovered wandering through the bustling Westgate district of Gloucester, even venturing onto a main road, putting both the animal and motorists at risk. Local council staff quickly intervened, relocating the yearling—affectionately named Merlin—to a secure location within the city where he is now being cared for.

Gloucester City Council shared on Facebook that Merlin was found dangerously close to rising floodwaters, underscoring the urgency of the rescue. Fortunately, the pony is reported to be fit and healthy, thanks to swift action by council workers.

Residents who spotted Merlin expressed relief and concern. One local remarked, “I saw this pony wandering around St Oswolds the other night, thought I was going mad! Glad it’s being looked after now.” Another added, “Glad he’s safe and well—here’s to his new, forever, loving home.”
