AA Issues M5 Amber Warning Ahead of Busy Late May Bank Holiday

The AA has issued an amber traffic warning for the late May Bank Holiday, anticipating a surge in road travel with approximately 20 million journeys expected daily from Saturday, May 24 to Monday, May 26. This increase is set to cause notable congestion, particularly on major roads including the M5.

Nearly half of these trips—about 50%—are forecasted to be short-distance journeys under 50 miles, suggesting that popular local spots, like retail parks at Cribbs Causeway near Bristol, could experience heavy traffic.

Sunday, May 24, is predicted to be the busiest day for leisure travelers, with over seven million trips planned. Many will be visiting seaside destinations, attending sporting events, or heading to garden centres, such as Dobbies near junction 9 of the M5 by Tewkesbury.

Additionally, around 3.5 million people have indicated plans for extended weekend breaks. As a result, congestion is expected on routes leading to coastal areas—including the A303, M5, and A38—and towards Wales, particularly on the M4 corridor.

Shaun Jones, the AA Patrol of the Year, emphasized the importance of preparation: “With this bank holiday bringing increased traffic levels, it’s vital that drivers check their vehicles before leaving. Inspect tyres, oil, and coolant levels, and ensure you have enough fuel or EV charge for your journey.”

He also recommended taking regular breaks on longer trips to prevent fatigue and maintain alertness. “By following these guidelines, we can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable travel experience for everyone over the holiday weekend,” Jones added.
