Drivers using the A419 near Stonehouse should prepare for significant disruption as a section of the road will be closed overnight for resurfacing works over seven nights. The closure affects a one-mile stretch of Bristol Road between Court View and the Spring Hill/Grove Lane roundabout.
The road will be closed between 8pm and 7am, starting on Friday, 11 September, and continuing most nights until Sunday morning, 20 September. There will be no closures over the weekend of 12 and 13 September.
Motorists are advised to follow a substantial diversion route of approximately 23 miles, as recommended by Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team. This detour begins at the A419 roundabout near the Travelodge in Stonehouse and leads northwest past the Stroudwater Interchange to the Bristol Road roundabout. From there, the route travels south along Bristol Road past Cambridge before reaching the Bullrush roundabout.

Continuing, the diversion heads southeast through Cam, Dursley, and Kingscote to the junction of the A4135 and A46 near Calcot and Spa, before looping northwards along the A46 through Nailsworth and South Woodchester, finally reconnecting with the A419 near Rodborough.
Under typical traffic conditions, drivers should expect an additional 45 minutes of travel time following this route. While shorter alternative routes may exist, the official diversion is designed to accommodate all vehicle classes on roads of equivalent type.
A recent letter to residents explained the necessity of the closures, citing safety for both the public and the workforce involved in the resurfacing. The implementation of a Temporary Traffic Order under Sections 14, 15, and 16 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 prohibits vehicle access during closure hours, with exceptions only for pedestrians where safe footways are available, emergency vehicles, and statutory undertakers responding to emergencies.
