A one-mile section of the A419 Bristol Road near Stonehouse will be closed overnight for seven nights as essential resurfacing works take place. The closure is set to begin at 8pm on Friday, 11 September, and continue until 7am on Sunday, 20 September, excluding the weekend of 12 and 13 September when no closures will occur.
The affected stretch runs between Court View and the roundabout at Spring Hill/Grove Lane. During the closure hours, drivers will be unable to access this part of the A419.
Motorists are advised that the official diversion route, recommended by Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team, is approximately 23 miles long. Starting at the A419 roundabout near Travelodge Stonehouse, the detour guides drivers northwest past the Stroudwater Interchange to the Bristol Road roundabout. From there, it continues south along Bristol Road past Cambridge to the Bullrush roundabout.
The route then proceeds southeast through Cam, Dursley, and Kingscote to the junction of the A4135 and A46 near Calcot & Spa. Finally, the diversion loops back north along the A46 through Nailsworth and South Woodchester before drivers rejoin the A419 near Rodborough.
According to normal traffic conditions, this diversion could add around 45 minutes to journey times. While shorter alternative routes might exist, the recommended diversion is deemed most appropriate for all vehicle classes.
In a letter sent to local residents last month, the Highways team explained: “We will be resurfacing the road at the above location. To ensure the safety of you and our workforce, we have arranged a Temporary Traffic Order to close the road under Sections 14, 15 & 16 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended.”
The letter acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the road closures but emphasised the necessity of the measures to safeguard both workers and the public. Access will be maintained only for pedestrians where a designated footway exists, emergency vehicles, and statutory undertakers responding to emergencies.
Residents who usually drive through the affected stretch during closure hours are urged to make alternative travel arrangements.
