The A40 dual carriageway, a crucial route linking Gloucester, Cheltenham, Ross-on-Wye, and connecting England with Wales, is set for major maintenance work that will likely cause significant delays for drivers.
The Over Bridge, built in the 1970s and carrying approximately 5,000 vehicles per hour during peak times, will undergo £7 million worth of essential repairs starting June 2026. National Highways aims to extend the bridge’s life and minimize the risk of unexpected closures by improving concrete structures, installing new waterproofing, upgrading drainage, and making other critical enhancements.
Work will begin with site preparation on June 8, including the installation of a site compound on the verge near the slip road from the A417 Over Causeway to the westbound A40. This slip road will be closed for the duration of the project.

From June 29, 2026, through March 2027, repairs will be carried out using lane closures, contraflow systems, and a reduced 30mph speed limit to maintain safety for both motorists and workers. Some overnight closures will be necessary, with clearly marked diversions in place to ensure continuous access.
Terry Robinson, Engineering Lead for National Highways, emphasized the importance of this work: “Many major roads were built around 60 years ago and require renewal to remain safe and reliable for future generations. The A40 at Over is no exception. While we expect delays, this maintenance is vital to keep the route operational and secure.”
Traffic management will be phased to minimize disruption. CCTV monitoring and a free recovery service will be available throughout the project. Temporary traffic lights may be installed at Over Roundabout if traffic flow requires it. Resident and business access will be maintained, though right-turn movements will be restricted with short detours via the A40 Highnam and Over roundabouts. The eastbound bus lane will continue operating until Horseshoe Drive, merging into the temporary road layout.
Motorists are advised to plan journeys ahead and consider alternative routes when possible, especially during peak hours, as the essential maintenance work progresses.
