Residents and local officials in Cheltenham are expressing concerns over potential traffic disruption caused by planned overnight roadworks on the A40 Gloucester Road. Starting January 8 and continuing through January 21, essential excavations will take place near Arle Court Roundabout to install two high voltage cables. These cables are needed to power the new electric bus chargers at Swanbrook bus depot located at the top of Pheasant Lane.
The work, carried out by electric vehicle chargepoint installer Envevo, will require lane closures from 7pm to 7am each night. Gloucestershire County Council’s roadworks map warns that delays are likely along this busy stretch of road during these hours.
Cheltenham Borough Councillor Simon Wheeler voiced his concerns, acknowledging the necessity of the works but highlighting the potential impact. “This is essential infrastructure, but the A40 carries heavy traffic at both 7am and 7pm, making disruption inevitable. We may need to adjust working hours or explore alternative methods to reduce congestion,” he said.
