Gloucestershire County Council has issued a traffic warning to parents ahead of the new school term, as repair work on the A40 overbridge near Gloucester is set to cause delays.
National Highways is continuing essential refurbishment of the bridge, with the eastbound carriageway closed between Over Farm and Over Roundabout until October. A contraflow system operates on the westbound side, allowing one lane of traffic in each direction under a 30mph speed limit.
With the expected increase in morning traffic as schools reopen in September, the council urges families to plan journeys in advance and consider alternative routes to minimise delays.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Gloucestershire County Council said: “As families prepare for the start of a new school year, we recognise that the return to school in September will mean more people travelling on our roads and that ongoing roadworks may add to journey times.
“We appreciate residents’ patience and understanding while this important refurbishment work by National Highways continues. To help avoid delays, please plan your journeys in advance and consider alternative routes where possible.

Diversion routes are currently in place. Drivers heading westbound will be unable to turn right into Over Farm, Toby Carvery, or Horseshoe Drive and must instead divert to the Highnam Roundabout to turn around. The diversions are reversed for eastbound traffic. Motorists are advised to follow the signed diversion routes and not rely on satellite navigation systems.
According to National Highways, the repair work will extend the lifespan of the bridge and is expected to reduce the likelihood of emergency closures in the future, ensuring safer and more reliable travel for the community.
