A Taste of the Mediterranean: LARDON Brings Holiday Vibes to the Cotswolds

Nestled within Elkstone Studios just south of Cheltenham, LARDON has swiftly become a beloved dining destination since its opening on June 22nd. Created by the celebrated teams behind award-winning KNEAD Bakery and the Cotswolds’ own Jesse Smith butcher chain, this new restaurant has been highly anticipated—and it certainly lives up to expectations.

Specializing in small plates inspired by the wood-fired cuisines of Tuscany, the Basque region, and Provence, LARDON crafts a menu that marries rustic charm with elevated flavors. Starters such as rosemary focaccia with smoked sea salt (£5) and Jamon Ibérico (£13) set the tone for a truly authentic experience. Mains like wood-fired cod with butterbean ragu and chorizo (£21) or lamb rump with broad beans (£25) showcase the kitchen’s commitment to rich, regional tastes.

Visiting on a sunny 23°C Wednesday afternoon, I was quickly transported to a Mediterranean holiday. The restaurant’s outdoor terrace, shaded by parasols, provided an inviting spot to unwind. A leisurely weekday lunch was enhanced by fellow diners savoring bottles of wine, creating a convivial yet unpretentious atmosphere.

The staff embraced the welcoming vibe, taking time to explain the concept of small plates and offering thoughtful recommendations. I chose the pork belly accompanied by Morcilla, Spanish blood sausage, and Sweetheart cabbage in roasting jus, priced at £19, adding a side of smoked rosemary and garlic potatoes (£7). Every bite was a revelation—the tender pork belly paired beautifully with the crispy, flavorful Morcilla, and the cabbage complemented the dish perfectly. The potatoes were fluffy, lightly crisped, and generously portioned.

Despite being close to a main road, Elkstone Studios feels like a serene boutique village, filled with independent shops, wellness studios, and a Padel hall—all set amid the picturesque Cotswold rolling hills. LARDON strikes a balance between sophistication and approachability, delivering a “posh without being off-putting” dining experience.

Co-owner Kris Biggs shared his enthusiasm, reflecting on a “brilliant” opening week with over 1,000 tables booked. Kris emphasized their dedication to quality without the Michelin star price tag: “John and I come from Michelin backgrounds, but here, it’s about accessible luxury. You get top-tier flavors at prices that won’t break the bank.”

LARDON operates daily for breakfast, lunch, and drinks from 8am to 8pm Sunday through Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays, it extends dinner service until 11pm, inviting guests to fully immerse themselves in a culinary escape inspired by the best of Europe.
