As Christmas draws near, many seek a serene place to enjoy festive cheer without the crowds. Just a short drive from Gloucestershire, near the M4, lies the charming village of Hinton in South Gloucestershire. Nestled on the outskirts of Bristol and adjacent to the National Trust landmark Dyrham Park, this peaceful village offers a perfect holiday retreat.

Dyrham Park is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty, spanning 270 acres with stunning gardens and a 17th-century Grade I listed mansion. Recognised with a Grade II listing on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, the estate promises an enriching day out. Adult admission is £21, children £10.50, while National Trust members enjoy free entry.

Throughout the festive season, the park hosts a range of Christmas events suitable for all ages, allowing visitors to soak up yuletide magic away from the city bustle. The park and gardens are open daily from 10am to 4pm. The house welcomes guests from 11.30am to 3pm, and the cosy tea-room serves until 3.30pm, remaining accessible until December 23.

Inside the house, five decorated rooms transport guests through time—from Tudor times to the 20th century. This year, an exciting new addition celebrates the millennium with vibrant retro décor and memorabilia from 1999. Visitors can have fun guessing which room matches each era, guided by unique decorations and traditional artifacts.

Families will delight in spotting miniature toy deer dressed elegantly to reflect different historical periods hidden throughout the rooms. On the grounds, a reindeer discovery trail offers children an interactive holiday adventure.

Plan your visit to coincide with Christmas choir performances at the village’s St Peter Church, held on weekends leading up to Christmas. The National Trust Shop also offers a thoughtful selection of gifts and festive treats.

After exploring, enjoy a meal at The Bull, Hinton’s historic 17th-century pub known for its dedication to locally sourced ingredients. Operating independently since 2014, the pub’s menu features favourites like faggots, vegan sweet potato burgers, and classic fish and chips. With generous portions and a variety of starters and desserts, there’s something to satisfy every appetite.

Praise from visitors is plentiful—one TripAdvisor reviewer highlights the pub as a “great cosy spot with superb customer service and a scrumptious Sunday Roast,” perfect for families thanks to its children’s play area. The Bull holds a glowing 4.5-star rating from nearly 600 reviews.

Located only two miles south of the M4, Hinton offers a delightful and tranquil alternative to busy urban festivities. Escape the rush and immerse yourself in a Christmas celebration filled with history, community, and calm.
