‘A huge collective effort to achieve season’s objective’ - Cheltenham Town boss Steve Cotterill reflects after Colchester United defeat

Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill shared his thoughts following a challenging end to the season with a 4-1 home loss to Colchester United. Despite the disappointing result, Cotterill acknowledged the hard work and collective effort that helped the club reach safety.

Reflecting on the game, Cotterill said, “It’s certainly not the result we wanted. We faced early setbacks, including a costly slip from Jordan Thomas inside the box that put us on the back foot from kick-off. We played some good football, created chances, but just didn’t get the breaks when needed. That’s been a theme of the season and something we must address going forward.”

He praised his players’ resilience and highlighted a strong team spirit that carried Cheltenham through a difficult campaign. “The season has been tough, but as I told the players, today was more about expressing my gratitude for their commitment since my return rather than dissecting the match itself. There are young players here who have learned a lot, and I’m proud of their progress.”

Cotterill also paid tribute to the loan players who contributed significantly this season. “Players like Isaac, Hutch, Harry Ashfield, Cole, Josh Davison, and Mo Faal have all been fantastic. Without their efforts, we wouldn’t have reached safety.”

Looking ahead, Cotterill acknowledged the upcoming challenge of player departures and roster changes. “We have some tough decisions to make regarding the squad, which is never easy. But continuity is important, even with budget constraints. We’re not planning any big spending sprees — instead, we aim to improve steadily and build a team players want to be part of.”

The manager also expressed heartfelt thanks to the supporters, who gave him a warm ovation despite the loss. “The love and support I’ve received since coming back here has been overwhelming and it fuels my commitment every day. It’s been a true collective effort involving staff, players, board, and fans alike.”

A special highlight from the day was honoring club legend Neil Grayson, whose presence and a banner dedicated to Cotterill drew emotional responses from many. “Seeing Neil score that header was fantastic—he would have been proud. Moments like these remind us of what this club means.”

Cotterill concluded with a note on his broader connections to the community, mentioning his honorary degree and nomination for the Freedom of the Borough, expressing pride and gratitude for these honors.

Despite the tough finish, Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill remains determined and optimistic about the club’s future, focusing on collective strength and steady progress.
