Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill spoke candidly following a 4-1 home defeat to Colchester United, a result that marked the end of a challenging season. Despite the disappointing scoreline, Cotterill emphasized the collective effort and the progress made throughout the campaign.
“The game didn’t start well, with Jordan Thomas slipping in the box early on, putting us on the back foot right from kick-off,” Cotterill reflected. “We played good football but didn’t get the breaks we needed, which unfortunately sums up the season.” He acknowledged the team’s resilience but also admitted that mistakes had cost crucial goals. “We scored some good goals and had chances to make it competitive, but ultimately, our efforts weren’t enough today.”
Cotterill praised the contributions of younger players, highlighting the learning curve they face as they develop. “There are a lot of young boys who have a lot to learn, and I thanked them for their commitment during my time here, especially as today was more about recognition than tactics.”

A special mention was made for the late Neil Grayson, whose presence and celebrated header from George Miller left a lasting impression. “Seeing Neil before the game was a highlight. It’s days like these, the shared moments, that I want to remember.”
Reflecting on the challenges of the job, Cotterill admitted, “It’s been a tough role, and I have worked tirelessly alongside my staff, players, board, and supporters. The work has been a true collective effort.” He expressed pride in the connection he has rebuilt with the club since his return.
Despite the defeat, the team received a standing ovation from supporters, an emotional moment for Cotterill. “The love I’ve received makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s not just about the training ground—it’s about the unity of everyone involved.”
Looking ahead, Cotterill confirmed that there will be changes to the squad. “Some players won’t be continuing, and that’s always tough. I’m emotionally invested in them, but decisions have to be made to improve the team.” He emphasized the importance of balancing continuity with improvement while working within budget constraints.
Cotterill also paid tribute to the loanees who played important roles this season, thanking them collectively. “Players like Isaac, Hutch, Harry Ashfield, Cole, Josh Davison, Mo Faal, and Sam Sherring have all made significant contributions.”
Looking forward to the next season, he mentioned the need to wait until loanees return to their parent clubs before making final decisions on recruitment. Cotterill also expressed his appreciation for the passionate support from the 1887 Red Army and other supporter groups, especially highlighting a new banner dedicated to him.
On a personal note, Cotterill shared his pride in receiving an honorary degree 26 years ago and his recent nomination for the Freedom of the Borough. “It means a lot to me, and if I get it, I’ll be incredibly proud. I might even aim for an OBE next!”
The match itself paused in the ninth minute to honor Neil Grayson, who was warmly celebrated by players and fans alike. Cotterill recalled, “It was a special moment to have Neil back with us, signing shirts and meeting the team. Life isn’t always straightforward, and moments like these put things in perspective.”
Despite the season’s ups and downs, Cotterill remains focused on progress and building a stronger future for Cheltenham Town.
