A key route to the Cotswolds village of Winstone, near Cirencester, will be closed for nine days next month, with a lengthy diversion in place for motorists. Pike Road, which typically provides access to Winstone from the A417 near The Highwayman Inn, will be shut daily between 7am and 7pm from Friday, 2 October to Wednesday, 14 October (excluding weekends) to allow essential resurfacing works.
Motorists approaching from the southbound carriageway of the A417 will face a significant detour of almost 20 miles. The recommended diversion, advised by Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways team, directs drivers off the A417 onto the opposite carriageway, passing Elkstone Studios before joining the A435 at Cowley Manor.
From there, the route continues south for nine miles along the A435 to Stratton, proceeds along Overley Road through Daglingworth, and then heads back up Jackbarrow Road to return to Winstone, circumventing the closed section of Pike Road. This detour is estimated to add approximately 30 minutes to normal journey times, although shorter alternative routes may exist. However, the council notes that this recommended diversion is the most suitable option for all vehicle types, maintaining a consistent road classification.

In a letter sent to residents, the Council’s Highways team explained the necessity of the closure due to the nature of resurfacing works, which require space not just on the section being treated but also for the movement and placement of machinery and materials. They emphasised that the closure is vital for the safety of both the public and the workforce, and assured that efforts have been made to complete the work promptly and to schedule it at a time that minimises disruption.
The Temporary Traffic Order, instituted under Sections 14, 15 & 16 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended), prohibits vehicles and pedestrians from proceeding along the closed roads except for pedestrian access where a designated footway exists, emergency service vehicles, and statutory undertakers responding to emergencies.
Residents who normally use this route during the closure hours are urged to make alternative arrangements in advance due to the restrictions.
