A significant 12-hour weather event is set to impact South West England and south Wales on Tuesday, November 11. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering parts of the region, cautioning residents about heavy rain, strong southerly winds, and potential flooding. Fortunately, Gloucestershire lies outside the severe warning area, though some heavy rainfall is expected, particularly in the Forest of Dean.
The alert will be in place from noon until the end of the day, with anticipated rainfall totals ranging from 20 to 40mm across most of the South West. In certain locations, especially on the south-facing slopes of Devon’s moors, rainfall could reach 50 to 70mm. The persistent and intense rain arriving from the west during the morning will intensify through the afternoon, accompanied by gusty winds.
While Gloucestershire is not included in the severe warnings, residents should be prepared for heavy rain during two main periods: from 6am to 11am and again from 5pm to 10pm. The Met Office has also indicated that the warning may be extended into Wednesday as continued rainfall remains a possibility.

Officials highlight that recent wet weather has saturated the ground in many areas, increasing the risk of localised flooding. Drivers should expect challenging road conditions due to water spray and flooding, with likely delays and a heightened risk of accidents, particularly during the evening commute.
The Met Office advises residents to:
- Check if their property is at risk of flooding and prepare an emergency flood plan and kit if necessary.
- Monitor road conditions and public transport schedules and adjust travel plans accordingly.
- Prepare for possible power outages by gathering essentials such as torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.
- Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts, as conditions can change quickly.
The yellow warning for south Wales is active from 7am to midnight, with rainfall expected to be heavy and persistent, especially on south-facing hills, along with strong winds. Rainfall totals of 30-50mm are likely, with up to 80mm in the wettest locations.
Forecast highlights include:
- Today: Heavy showers moving east in the morning, potential thunder, intermittent sunny intervals, and blustery winds. High of 13°C.
- Tonight: Scattered evening showers, turning wet and windy with strong southerly winds by morning. Low of 7°C.
- Tuesday: Windy with periods of heavy rain, some drier spells likely in the afternoon. Very mild with a high of 14°C.
- Wednesday to Friday: Continued unsettled, mild conditions with further heavy rain and windy periods, though occasional drier intervals are expected.
Residents across the affected regions are urged to remain vigilant, plan ahead, and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the challenging weather.
