Makeup stains on bedding are a common nuisance, especially after a long day when removing makeup before bed is often forgotten. Foundation, mascara, and other cosmetics leave marks that can be notoriously hard to remove.
Thankfully, cleaning experts at Lottomart have uncovered an easy and affordable solution that avoids expensive stain removers or professional treatments. Their go-to remedy is a simple paste made from bicarbonate of soda and washing-up liquid—both household staples that cost just pennies.
“Makeup stains tend to be oil-based, which cling stubbornly to fabric,” explains a Lottomart spokesperson. “This DIY paste uses everyday ingredients to gently break down the oils without resorting to harsh chemicals.”

To prepare the paste, mix a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda—available for around 65p at stores like Tesco or Asda—with a few drops of washing-up liquid, which can be purchased for as little as 50p. This creates a thick, textured paste that effectively targets the stain.
Before applying, blot the stained area with cold water—cold water is essential, as hot water can set makeup stains permanently. Then, spread the paste evenly over the mark and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. During this time, the bicarbonate of soda absorbs oils while the washing-up liquid dissolves pigment residue.
After the treatment, rinse the area thoroughly with cold water, then launder the bedding on a cool cycle with your usual detergent.
“The mild abrasiveness of bicarbonate of soda is critical,” the spokesperson adds. “It lifts stains gently without damaging fabric fibers. Combined with washing-up liquid, it provides a powerful yet gentle cleaning action against various makeup stains.”
For particularly stubborn blemishes, a second application before washing is recommended. This quick and inexpensive method offers an effective alternative to costly products—using just items from your kitchen cupboard.
